Tensions ran high in Downtown Miami yesterday morning when a man, later identified as 33-year-old Brent Williams, reportedly brandished a gun at Maurice A. Ferré Park, eliciting fear among unsuspecting pedestrians. According to the Miami Herald, one woman, who had disembarked from her vehicle to have a smoke, became the first to confront the pointed barrel of Williams' alleged weapon as he declared that she was going to die.
Williams, a California native with a history of felony convictions, went on to aim the gun at various other individuals in the park, causing panic and confusion, the Local 10 News reported. A man named Jens Klapatsch, who was walking his dog at the time of the incident, revealed that he head two gunshots before a rapid encounter with the armed Williams. “I saw some guy walking really fast towards me and then I saw he has a gun,” Klapatsch told Local 10.
Mere moments later, a gray Ruger P94, the gun mentioned in the scare, surfaced once more as a focal point of the arrest. Police confirmed the firearm was previously reported stolen in Miami Gardens. Post-arrest, Williams appeared agitated and uncooperative. He currently resides at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with bail set at $8,500 for a roster of charges, including aggravated assault with a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon, as per police logs cited by the Miami Herald.
Within an hour of the initial confrontation, law enforcement was on scene, detaining Williams as he crossed Biscayne Boulevard. When confronted by the officers, he raised his hands, lay on the ground, and admitted to having a gun in his pocket. “Basically there they already had him in custody super fast,” Klapatsch remarked in a statement obtained by Local 10 News. Despite the rapid containment of the situation by police, a clear motive for Williams' actions has not been disclosed, with investigations ongoing and his court appearance scheduled for today.
