A 70-year-old man in Aurora was the victim of a violent attack by a teenager during an attempted robbery, as reported by the Aurora Police Department. The incident occurred late last month and the 17-year-old suspect from Aurora has now been apprehended and faces multiple charges. According to a WGN-TV article, the teen is charged with two counts of aggravated battery, resisting a peace officer, attempted robbery, and aggravated battery to a person over 60.
Police were summoned to the 2000 block of West Galena Boulevard around 11:15 p.m. on the night of the attack. The elderly man reported being approached and demanded money by a young male who proceeded to quickly strike him multiple times in the face and head. Even after the victim had been knocked to the ground, the assault continued, with the perpetrator continuing to beat him, as "a violent, unprovoked attack," according to Shaw Local. The victim managed to escape, called the police, and was able to give a detailed description of the attacker.
Officers responding to the scene found the elderly man with significant facial injuries, including swollen eyes and a facial laceration. He was transported to Mercy Hospital by paramedics from the Aurora Fire Department, where it was confirmed that he suffered a broken orbital bone. The suspect was located by officers in the area near where the victim had described and was apprehended after attempting to run from the police.
Aurora Police Chief Matthew Thomas commented on the severity and nature of the crime, noting, "This was a violent, unprovoked attack on a member of our community." In his statement obtained by WGN-TV, Chief Thomas expressed relief that the victim's injuries were not more severe and emphasized the department's commitment to "protecting those who need it the most."
With the suspect now in custody at the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center, the Aurora Police Department continues their investigation into the attack. Authorities are appealing for anyone with further information to come forward and contact the Aurora Police Department’s Investigations Division at (630) 256-5500. The community's cooperation is vital to ensure thorough justice is served.
