In what is being described as a major enhancement to regional healthcare infrastructure, Barnes-Jewish Hospital is set to open its new Plaza West Tower in October, adding significant capacity to their service provisions. This 16-story patient care tower offers a mix of 224 private rooms and 56 intensive care units, specifically designed to manage heart and vascular patients, as reported by St. Louis Public Radio. Dr. John Lynch, President of Barnes-Jewish Hospital, stated during a media tour that "about 80 to 100 new patients will be able to be served at any one time by adding this facility."
The expansion reflects Barnes-Jewish Hospital's continuous efforts to swiftly adapt to the community's health care demands, underscoring their role as a pivotal referral center for the Midwest. The new tower will not only aim to quickly accommodate patients from the region but also those referred to the hospital's advanced heart disease programs, Dr. Lynch told First Alert 4. "We serve as a referral center for the Midwest and in some cases nationally and internationally for patients with advanced heart disease and this building lets us make that kind of investment to support that amazing program," he said.
Designed with present and future challenges in mind, the Plaza West Tower has built-in accommodations for pandemic scenarios and patient volume surges. Aside from enhancing patient care, the facility includes considers family needs, incorporating amenities such as a family area furnished with a kitchenette, rest areas, showers, and a laundry room. These provisions underscore the hospital's attention to the patient's wider circle of care, taking into consideration the feedback received from staff and patients during the planning phase, which was highlighted by St. Louis Public Radio.
The addition of the Plaza West Tower represents a considerable investment in the local healthcare landscape and is part of a longer-term campus renewal project that Barnes-Jewish Hospital is undertaking. As articulated by Nick Barto, President of BJC Health System, "The Plaza West Tower represents the power of academic medicine combined with our unwavering commitment to elevating patient care and improving the health of the communities we serve," in a statement included in a news release by FOX 2 Now. BJC leaders have announced that subsequent phases of the renewal project, including renovations to older sections of the hospital, are slated to begin in 2026.
