Bay Area drivers, take note: major traffic changes are coming to a section of I-55 this weekend. Starting at 8 p.m. tonight, MoDOT crews will be re-routing southbound I-55 traffic between McNutt Street and U.S. 67 onto the newly constructed pavement. So, if your commute takes you through that area, plan for some potential delays as you navigate the new setup.
According to MoDOT, the southbound I-55 lane near McNutt Street, along with entrance and exit ramps at Route A, will be closed. Additionally, the southbound exit to U.S. Route 67 won't be accessible. These closures are scheduled to last until early Saturday morning, with everything expected to reopen by 5:00 a.m. on September 20. Drivers should definitely look out for the detour signs to avoid any confusion.
By 7:00 a.m. on Monday, September 22, all southbound I-55 traffic should be smoothly rolling onto the new pavement. This shift marks a significant milestone in the ongoing infrastructure project aimed at improving the roadways and potentially reducing future congestion.
Come early October, northbound I-55 will also see a shift. Traffic will be moved onto the median pavement. This move will make room for the demolition of the northbound bridges over US 67, 3rd Street, and Central Avenue. As with any large-scale roadwork, all of these scheduled dates are, of course, dependent on the cooperation of the weather. Stay tuned, as the current changes are just the precursor to more substantial shifts in the regional commute landscape.
