The National Weather Service San Francisco (NWS San Francisco) has released information predicting a moderate HeatRisk in the inland areas of the Bay Region from Monday through Wednesday next week, as temperatures are expected to soar. The NWS San Francisco update specifies that the upcoming work week will see much warmer temperatures compared to this weekend's cool weather.
Today's weather, while marked by an increased marine layer and low stratus reaching an altitude of 2000ft, is likely to involve temperatures that are near or slightly below normal. Besides obstructing our hankering for the sun, the cloud deck is expected to retract by late morning inland, but may linger by the coast all day.
As for the longer-term outlook, a weak cold front will cross the area on Sunday, according to the NWS San Francisco. Looking ahead, the East Bay Hills and South Bay may experience highs near the triple digits early into the week, with southern Monterey County also feeling the heat. However, forecasters await a consensus on whether the heat will intensify or be undercut by an upper-level low, so more definitive messaging on the heat impact will come soon.
For those with an eye to the sky, aviation is affected by the substantial marine layer, but the clouds should give way gradually. In areas north of San Francisco Bay, after the stratus makes its evening resurgence, skies are expected to remain clear through much of the night into Sunday morning, with some churn of dry air aloft. Travelers and pilots should be prepared for varying visibility conditions due to the marine layer's ebb and flow.
The maritime community should heed the Small Craft Advisories in effect for several coastal areas over the weekend, per the NWS announcements. These advisories suggest that moderate seas and fresh breezes, usual for this time of year, will persist. Precautions should be taken, especially offshore, as widespread fresh breezes are anticipated into Sunday afternoon before conditions improve at the start of the week.
