The National Association of Prosecutor Coordinators has recognized a local Deputy District Attorney, Erica Jones, for her exceptional work in traffic safety prosecution, bestowing upon her the honor of the 2025 National Traffic Safety Prosecutor of the Year Award. The accolade follows her substantial contributions to the DA's Office in both her caseload and innovative approach to vehicular fatality cases, as reported by Boulder County.
Since stepping into her role in 2024, Jones has not shied away from the rigorous demands of a full felony docket, nor from the considerable responsibilities of leading the DA Vehicular Response Unit, where she has proven herself available around the clock for law enforcement assisting in investigations at crash scenes, advising on evidence gathering all the while, ensuring proper protocol in the collection of blood and breath samples and even helping officers secure warrants necessary for the cases.
Her immersion in the realm of vehicular-related legal battles extends to the training of officers and refining the quality and timing of investigatory measures, inevitably uplifting the experiences of families who tremble in the aftershock of loss, whether it be in comprehension or in the courtroom, as was evident in one of Jones' paramount cases, People v. Earl Garczynski.
In Garczynski's case, where a high-velocity pursuit turned deadly, Jones not only worked tirelessly through the seven-day trial but also ensured that those mourning the victims had a say, a grievance aired and witnessed, her persuasive narrative led to Garczynski's life imprisonment without parole, as District Attorney Michael Dougherty proudly proclaimed, "Erica deserves it; she is an outstanding and hardworking prosecutor who gives her very best to some of our most difficult and painful cases," Dougherty's words encapsulating the sentiment behind the award, as obtained by Boulder County.
