A 64-year-old man from Northglenn, Colorado, named Kevin Crosswright, was taken into custody at the Broward County jail yesterday after being accused by the Lighthouse Point Police of scamming a woman out of over $61,000, leaving her "horrible and penniless," as she described in a report obtained by Local 10 News. The alleged fraud is part of a larger pattern of deception, with Crosswright suspected of money laundering and related scams totaling upwards of $17 million according to law enforcement officials.
Despite the relatively smaller sum involved in the Broward case, the police report highlighted a broader scheme with victims nationwide reporting losses exceeding $10 million, the woman caught up in this incident communicated with someone named "James Lee Jackson," using a Gmail account linked to a Nigerian phone number and accessed from multiple locations including Washington, D.C., Miami, and South Africa; the checks made out to Crosswright were cashed in Colorado and as the investigation progressed an FBI agent identified the suspect from bank surveillance footage, "wearing a brown zip-up sweatshirt, blue t-shirt and a Colorado Rockies baseball hat", Local 10 News further explains.
Federal agents have documented what they describe as "a clear pattern of money laundering" implicating Crosswright, with losses now estimated to be over $17 million, the suspect, however, has not shown up in a search of online federal court records up until last Friday, revealing the ongoing complexity of the case. The victim has made multiple attempts to reach "James Lee Jackson" to retrieve her funds to no avail, and she has expressed to the police a strong wish that Crosswright should not be released before the trial.
Today, Crosswright appeared in court facing grand theft charges; the Broward judge set his bond at $60,000, also stipulating that the funds used for bail must be proved legitimate before his release and that he should have no contact with the defrauded woman, according to revelations from the news report. Additional details about Crosswright, including his physical description and arrest date, were posted by Broward County Mugshots.
