Residents and commuters in Duluth should prepare to adapt their travel plans starting today. The City of Duluth is initiating a construction project to replace lead water service lines along 24th Avenue W, a move that is bound to temporarily transform traffic patterns in the area. The work is set to take place from Superior Street to 10th Street, necessitating the road's closure for an estimated two weeks, according to an announcement released by the city.
The city has planned detours to manage the flow of traffic. For those heading northbound, the detour will run from Superior Street to 27th Avenue W, then to 10th Street, and back onto 24th Avenue W. Southbound travellers will be directed from 10th Street to 27th Avenue W, then to Superior Street, and finally back onto 24th Avenue W. These changes are expected to significantly delay travel, and the city recommends finding alternative routes. The road closure map has been updated to reflect these detours.
Implementing such detours is never a seamless process; incumbents with hiccups, as city workers and contractors laboriously move from site to site. While cross streets will largely remain open, intermittent closures should be expected to allow for the movement of equipment, materials, and personnel. Drivers and pedestrians should remain mindful of these potential temporary closures.
The city is eager to emphasize that the timing of construction work and the duration of the road closure could potentially change, and advises residents and commuters to stay updated through the city’s communication channels. As for those directly impacted by the inconvenience, the city points out the essential nature of the project, replacing infrastructure that remains crucial for the public's health and safety. Commuters are hence encouraged to not only plan to possibly arrive later but also consider the long-term benefits that such infrastructure improvements are bound to bring.
