Dyersburg’s St. John Apartments was disrupted last Sunday by a series of fires later determined to be arson. According to Action News 5, 19-year-old David Weird has been charged with arson in connection with the incident.
The Dyersburg Police Department (DPD) was called to the same location three times within three hours, WREG reported. Weird was identified as a suspect after being seen nearby and arrested. The first call at 6:40 p.m. involved a broken window.
Officers later found two active fires—one near the rear door of the complex and another in a vacant apartment. FOX13 Memphis reported that before the fires, Weird had been involved in a dispute with a family member at the complex. When officers arrived, they saw him watching the fire.
The DPD stated that Weird’s description was quickly circulated among officers, leading to his arrest after he ran from the scene. Officials have not released more details about the family dispute or the motive for the alleged arson.
