
El Paso County is preparing to celebrate a milestone in law enforcement training with the graduation of Basic Peace Officer Academy Class 25-01, dubbed "Achaeans." According to a social media post from El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte, the graduation marks the launch of a new era under his administration, with a renewed focus on crisis intervention.
The graduating class comprises 10 new deputies headed to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and 2 new officers joining the Horizon City Police Department. In a significant first for the academy, these graduates have received Crisis Intervention Training, setting a precedent for future classes. El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte took to Facebook to express his pride, "Tomorrow we celebrate the graduation of Basic Peace Officer Academy Class 25-01 – 'Achaeans.'"
Community members and officials have shown immense support for the new graduates, acknowledging the importance of law enforcement officers being trained to handle situations involving mental health crises. The addition of Crisis Intervention Training aims to provide these officers with the skills necessary to de-escalate potentially volatile situations, ensuring better outcomes for all parties involved.
