Over the weekend, the Valle Verde campus of El Paso Community College (EPCC) became a hub for future innovators and critical thinkers. EPCC launched its inaugural STEAM Day Symposium, setting the stage for a confluence of ideas and inspiration in the realms of Science, Technology, Engineering, Architecture, and Mathematics. On Saturday, according to EPCC News, the event drew a diverse crowd consisting of high school and college students, faculty, and professionals from a spectrum of STEAM-related fields.
At the heart of the symposium were thought-provoking talks, interactive activities, and opportunities for up-and-coming students to network with experienced professionals. Notable participants came from multiple educational institutions and sectors, including EPCC faculty, the UTEP Center for Research in Engineering and Technology Education, and members of the EPCC Student Government Association who provided mentorship. "The goal was to spark interest in STEAM careers and show students the many paths they can take," Jesusita Ibarra, an EPCC Engineering Faculty member and event organizer, told EPCC News.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Antonio J. Cachazo, of EcoFlow at Frontera Textile Distributors, who brought to the table his insights from over two decades in global logistics, supply chain management, and sustainable practices. Cachazo's discourse on innovation and resilience underscored the symposium’s aims to bridge STEAM education with tangible, global impact.
Highlighting the multidisciplinary collaboration that went into planning this event, Dr. Rebecca Escamilla, Dean of Architecture, Art, Math & Science at EPCC, expressed her excitement and satisfaction with the initiative. "We were excited to be hosting the first STEAM symposium at the Valle Verde campus, and I was happy to see how well all the disciplines came together to plan this event," Escamilla articulated, as per EPCC News. The symposium was not just an academic exercise, but also showcased EPCC's robust programs, encouraging the community to start their STEAM education journey in the supportive environment of the college.
