El Paso Community College (EPCC) is gearing up to embrace the digital battleground of esports as its latest athletic endeavor. Joining forces with over 200 institutions already competing under the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE) umbrella, EPCC is about to dive headlong into a world where precision and strategic ingenuity are par for the virtual course. The broad spectrum of games, including the likes of Halo, League of Legends, and Madden 24, ensures that a wide variety of digital athletes can find their niche in this rapidly expanding domain.
According to EPCC News, Dr. William Serrata, the college's president, believes that "everything we do is to enhance the potential of our students." As an educational institution, EPCC seeks to provide opportunities for students to succeed in multiple spheres, academically, personally, and professionally. The introduction of esports is perceived not just as a game but as a potential-packed opportunity, aligning with the college's vision to deliver excellent student experiences.
The push for an esports program originally spurred from the student body itself, with EPCC's Student Government Association pitching the idea to the Board of Trustees. Putting their support behind the initiative, Judge Brian Haggerty, EPCC Chair of the Board of Trustees, said, "Our decision to support esports reflects that same commitment," underscoring the board's focus on student success both in academics and athletics, as reported by EPCC News.
Tournaments are on the horizon for EPCC this fall, with the Tejanos esports team to be helmed by Interim Coach Adan Lara, an adjunct Biology Professor and Kinesiology Lab Supervisor with a seasoned history in gaming and esports. Lara plans to not only build a competitive team but also establish a program that endures. “For me, esports has always been more than just competition—it's about passion, teamwork, and opportunity," Lara conveyed in his vision to lead EPCC to the forefront of community college esports nationally, adding he is about to strategically recruit and expand the team, according to EPCC News.
