The El Paso Community College (EPCC) Foundation, in partnership with the EPCC Culinary Arts program and 22 company sponsors, recently hosted the 8th Annual Fajitas and Margaritas for Scholarships event, marking another year of community contribution to education. According to EPCC News, the sold-out event not only showcased the talents of EPCC's student chefs but also raised significant funds for student scholarships.
EPCC President Dr. William Serrata expressed gratitude for the community's support, pointing out the impact on students' academic journeys. "Your investment in scholarships helps our students stay in school and graduate," Dr. Serrata told EPCC News. He praised the event as a demonstration of student and faculty excellence in a competitive and joyous atmosphere.
Local celebrity judges joined the event, which featured a culinary competition among EPCC Culinary Arts students who created innovative fajita and margarita recipes. Judges included industry professionals such as Chef Emiliano Marentes, a former EPCC student himself, and personalities from El Paso's social scene, listed by the EPCC announcement. Scholarships were awarded to five standout students, symbolizing the event’s focus on promoting and recognizing student achievement and community spirit.
Melanie Carranza, an EPCC Culinary Arts student and one of the scholarship recipients, conveyed her joy, saying, "I was so nervous, and I am so happy!" Carranza revealed to EPCC News the friendly rivalry and camaraderie present at the event. The scholarship winners demonstrate not only academic prowess but also commitment to community engagement and the culinary arts.
Moreover, the event was enlivened by musical performances from EPCC faculty and students, and featured an auction that included over 100 items. Chef Steven Lowry, leading TEAM La Piñata, commented on the students' efforts. "Very proud, the students did all the work, they really took charge and utilized all the things they learned," he mentioned to EPCC News. His team clinched awards for the Golden Skillet Fajitas and Best Decorated Serving Station.
