El Paso County deputies intervened in a situation that may have well saved three children from continued exposure to a perilous living condition. As reported by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, the arrest occurred early morning on Maxwell Street, where deputies spotted a blue Ford Focus with several occupants, including the children.

The car, upon inspection, appeared to be a small haven for drug activity. Deputies found the adult female, Kimberly Harris, 38, asleep at the wheel with drug paraphernalia in plain view. Harris was arrested without incident, as the deputies did the requisite work to ensure the safety and well-being of the young passengers before searching the vehicle more deeply.

A search of the car brought to light additional paraphernalia and small quantities of illicit substances, 0.1 grams of methamphetamine and 3.0 grams of heroin. The presence of these substances amongst children paints a grim tableau of the reality many minors face, tossed into an environment where addiction trumps their basic human needs.
