
Elkhart County legislators have announced an increase in Indiana’s third grade literacy rates, based on the 2024-2025 Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD) results. According to State Rep. David Abbott, reading scores rose by nearly five percentage points, with more than 87% of third graders now reading proficiently, returning to pre-pandemic levels.
As per the Indiana House Republicans release, State Rep. Joanna King reported that all student populations showed improvement in literacy rates. Indiana’s fourth and eighth graders also ranked sixth nationally in the 2024 National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP).
State Rep. Tim Wesco highlighted legislative actions supporting literacy, including the 2023 implementation of science of reading standards focusing on phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension. A 2024 law introduced screenings to identify students at risk of reading proficiency lapses for early intervention.
