Bay Area commuters, your clean-air privileges are running on fumes. Since the start of October, those familiar Clean Air Vehicle (CAV) decals haven't offered a free pass into carpool lanes or bridge toll discounts. As previously reported by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the federal CAV program is set to end on September 30, leaving CAV-tagged vehicles to blend back into the traffic mix with regular license plates from October 1.

FasTrak® users needn’t worry about a trip to the service center; the agency assures that CAV tags will automatically transition to standard FasTrak Flex tags. However, Caltrans is tasked with an update; they will change the HOV signs across the Bay Area to reflect the new rules.

The entitlement once afforded to CAV-stickered vehicles was easily seen and envied on our congested highways. But this shift sharpens the focus back on carpooling's original intent, giving buses and carpoolers an advantage and, in turn, nudging the needle toward better air quality goals. It echoes broader discussions on how individual choices are tangled with communal benefits and responsibilities.
