Blaine City Council has officially chosen Erik Thorvig as the city's new manager, a decision reached after a comprehensive nationwide hunt to find the most suitable candidate for the position, as reported by a recent Blaine City announcement. This search, steered by Strategic Government Resources, drew in a wealth of qualified applicants from far and wide, highlighting the competitiveness and attractiveness of the role within the landscape of municipal governance.
The council's decision fell on Thorvig who had already been contributing as Blaine’s interim city manager and community development director, bringing to the table a blend of hands-on local experience and a track record of spearheading key development projects, since kicking off his public service journey at the City of Anoka and later joining Blaine in 2015, as the economic development coordinator before moving up to community development director in 2019, a period marked by significant accomplishments and fortified partnerships with local businesses and the community.
Thorvig, a University of Minnesota alum, steps in to fill the shoes of the retired Michelle Wolfe, taking the helm to manage the city's operations, which includes overseeing 250 employees and the stewardship of a $50 million general fund budget—tasks he is well-prepared for after his interim stint at the role. "I am honored by the trust the City Council has placed in me," Thorvig stated, as reported by City of Blaine, acknowledging the weight of the responsibility and his excitement to serve Blaine's burgeoning populace.
The appointment, which received a stamp of approval via a unanimous vote at the September 15 city council meeting, was warmly received by Mayor Tim Sanders who lauded Thorvig's blend of development savvy, his unwavering dedication to high-caliber customer service, superb communication skills, and a strong dedication to fostering a positive work environment for city employees and the residents they serve, the mayor affirmed that these qualities combined with Thorvig’s deep-rooted understanding of Blaine's unique community dynamics and his vision looking forward makes him the perfect fit to steer the city on a prosperous course into the future.
As Blaine now turns over a new leaf under Thorvig's leadership, city officials, stakeholders, and residents alike hold anticipations of continued growth and the promise of a city government committed to exemplary service and innovation for all who call Blaine home.
