A fatal collision on Sunday morning in Claiborne County has resulted in one death and left another driver injured. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), the incident involved two drivers who collided on US 25E south of Tom Ball Road. As reported by WBIR, the crash occurred around 6:45 a.m.
The deceased, identified by THP as 75-year-old Merle T. Chamberlain of Kentucky, was driving a Ford F-150 southbound when Santana R. Onofre, 38, of Mexico, driving a 2002 Ford E55 northbound, failed to maintain lane and went into the southbound lane, resulting in a head-on collision. The crash caused both vehicles to come to an uncontrolled stop. Although both drivers were wearing seatbelts, Chamberlain succumbed to his injuries while Onofre was hurt, as WVLT detailed.
Investigations by THP are ongoing, and according to a WATE report, charges against Onofre are pending the outcome. The specifics of the crash indicate the Ford E55 was moving downhill in a straightaway prior to the incident when it crossed into the opposing lane.
