The raid, part of a crackdown on the employment of undocumented workers, resulted in a dramatic chase where several individuals attempted to evade authorities by plunging into a sewage pond - one going as far as trying to capsize a boat retrieving them, as detailed by a Department of Justice press release. United States Attorney Margaret E. Heap emphasized the scale of the operation and its intent. "This was a significant undertaking with substantial results," she stated.
Throughout the operation, law enforcement officials identified upwards of 475 people unlawfully employed at the HL-GA Battery Company. The joint effort included personnel from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), and several other federal and state agencies. Assistant United States Attorneys are leading the ongoing investigation, which aligns with the larger national initiative known as Operation Take Back America - aimed at staunching the flow of illegal immigration and dismantling criminal organizations.
While the investigation continues and those apprehended are presumed innocent until proven guilty, the federal search warrants execution at the battery plant underscores the government's increased efforts against illegal employment practices. The larger initiative, Operation Take Back America, encompasses a variety of federal agencies with the collective goal of eradicating the threats posed by cartels and transnational criminal organizations. In her statement on the U.S. Attorney's Office website, Heap articulated the multi-agency pursuit. "The goal of this operation is to reduce illegal employment and prevent employers from gaining an unfair advantage by hiring unauthorized workers. Another goal is to protect unauthorized workers from exploitation," she added.
