Five students from Pinecrest Glades Academy in West Miami-Dade were hospitalized after consuming a food item shared by a student on campus. As reported by WSVN, the incident occurred this morning and required response from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, escalating to a level one mass casualty incident.
Following the event, the school officials sent a message to families saying, "This matter is also under investigation by law enforcement. Please rest assured that we are taking every necessary step to address this unfortunate situation and to ensure the continued safety of our students." While officials did not disclose the nature of the food item in question, they urged parents to discuss the gravity of such actions with their children. Responding to the situation quickly, the authorities did not provide immediate details on the students' conditions, according to WSVN.
The affected students, who range in age from 14 to 16, were taken to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital. According to the same publication, hospital officials confirmed the receipt of five teenage patients in good condition who were being their pediatric emergency room treated alongside with their parents.
Emphasizing the severity of the incident, Pinecrest Glades Academy sought to remind students of potential consequences for such actions. "We ask that you take a moment to remind your children of the seriousness of their actions," the school stated in a message obtained by CBS News. "What may seem like a simple choice can carry very severe consequences, including potential criminal charges and school-related disciplinary measures." Located at 15250 SW 8th St, the academy educates students from kindergarten through the 12th grade.
