Fort Lauderdale commuters and residents should prepare for upcoming traffic changes. Starting next Tuesday, Broward County will begin a series of bridge projects over the New River. The SW 4th Avenue, SE 3rd Avenue, and Andrews Avenue bridges are scheduled for scour protection work, according to the county’s Public Works Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division.
The work comes after inspections by the Florida Department of Transportation identified “scour-critical” conditions at the bridges, meaning the riverbeds beneath them are at risk of erosion. Repairs are planned to be completed by September 2026, though weather delays could affect the timeline, according to the county's news release.
Drivers should expect lane closures on the streets beneath the bridge approaches during construction, though flaggers will be on site to guide traffic through the work zones. Boaters can expect minimal interruptions. Broward County has coordinated with multiple agencies to ensure the projects meet regulatory and environmental standards, with funding provided by a $3 million grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Resilient Florida Program, matched by the county to support the bridge upgrades, as detailed by the same news release.
For more information or questions about the projects, residents can contact the Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division at (954) 357-6040. Project Manager John Low is also available at (954) 579-2459 or via email at [email protected]. County officials are asking for patience as the bridge work gets underway.
