The City of Fort Lauderdale's sewer system is undergoing a thorough inspection as crews from Insituform Technologies work to document the state of sewer mains and laterals in Dolphin Isles, Central Beach, and Lauderdale Beach. The project, which kicked off in May 2025, was initially scheduled for completion by mid-July, yet the finish line has been pushed back several times, now aiming for an October wrap-up.
According to an update from the City of Fort Lauderdale, additional sewer pipes have tacked on to the list of areas to be inspected. Resuming on September 11, the inspections will be conducted within boundaries spanning from the West: Intracoastal Waterway to the East: A1A / N. Ocean Boulevard, and from the North: NE 29th Street to the South: NE 19th Street, as stated in the original notice issued on June 17. The crews' efforts are concentrated on weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., although these scheduled times are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
For those traversing these neighborhoods, be prepared for some disruption. Temporary lane closures along local streets and A1A / N. Ocean Boulevard are expected during the inspection hours. Traffic control staff will be on-site to guide vehicles and pedestrians safely around the work zones. "Access to driveways will be maintained," the City of Fort Lauderdale assures, urging residents and visitors alike to adhere to posted signage and proceed with caution.
Residents have been advised a week in advance of any inspections set to roll out on their street. They are recommended to "keep toilet lids closed and pour 1 gallon of water down all floor drains or any rarely used sinks, tubs and toilets to ensure that a water barrier is maintained in the traps," as preventive measures against any possible back pressure during the sewer main inspections. These guidelines aim to reduce the likelihood of water pushing out of toilets and flooding bathroom floors. "Remove your cleanout cap in the morning and replace it at night to reduce the possibility of water pushing out of toilets and onto the bathroom floor from any back pressure that may occur in the sewer main," residents should take these steps to mitigate any potential issues, as stated on the city's website.
