A Fort Wayne police officer was hospitalized in serious condition following a stabbing incident that occurred on Monday evening during a reported domestic disturbance. The confrontation took place in the 2100 block of St. Marys Avenue, where officers were dispatched around 5:59 p.m., according to a press release from the Fort Wayne Police Department, as FOX 59 reports. The violence unfolded when an argument escalated between an individual and a responding officer, leading to one officer being stabbed.
Subsequent to the altercation, Fort Wayne officers on scene resorted to the use of their firearms at 6:07 p.m. after calling for backup and requesting emergency medical assistance, indicating that an officer had been wounded. The officer in question managed to fire their weapon, shooting the suspect involved in the incident, as detailed by WTHR. Emergency services were summoned to treat both the injured officer and the shot suspect.
Following the incident, a significant police presence was observed, with at least 30 FWPD police cars reported on the scene along with the Indiana State Police and Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, as relayed by WISH-TV. The officer was transported to an area hospital, and while their condition has been described as serious, no information is currently available about the condition of the suspect.
True to department protocol, the officers who discharged their weapons have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is carried out. In the meantime, support pours in from surrounding law enforcement agencies. IMPD Chief Chris Bailey expressed his solidarity through a post on X, stating, "Our hearts are with the Fort Wayne Police Department tonight," and went on to offer prayers for the injured officer, their family, and the FWPD team, as highlighted by FOX 59.
