The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting an independent investigation into an officer-involved shooting incident that occurred in Brunswick, part of Glynn County, Georgia. The incident, which unfolded without physical injuries, took place on August 30, and has led to multiple charges against the suspect.

Early in that morning, officers with the Glynn County Police Department responded to a call at the Motel 6 on 3040 Scarlett Street, aiming to check on a potential domestic violence situation. Upon arrival, they encountered 58-year-old David Kevin Griffis. The situation escalated rapidly when Griffis allegedly pointed a gun at the officers, prompting an exchange of gunfire where, fortunately, no one was struck. To subdue Griffis, officers used tear gas/pepper spray, leading to his surrender. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's report, no officers or other individuals sustained injuries during this altercation.

Following the incident, the Glynn County Police Department arrested Griffis and charged him with four counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, as well as one count each of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime. Griffis was subsequently taken to the Glynn County Jail after receiving medical clearance.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's independent inquiry into the officer's use of force will culminate in a case file, which is to be delivered to the Brunswick District Attorney's Office for further review. This investigation is part of a standard procedure meant to ensure all actions taken during such confrontations adhere to legal and ethical standards. More details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
