In a recent collaboration between state and federal powers, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and President Donald J. Trump have co-signed a Presidential Memorandum that brings into existence the Memphis Safe Task Force, an initiative designed to counteract the surge of violent crime in Memphis. During the Oval Office meeting, Gov. Lee also sought President Trump's approval to activate the Tennessee National Guard in support of this law enforcement drive.
The task force is a concentrated effort to unify various law enforcement entities, which include the Tennessee National Guard, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and the Memphis Police Department. According to a statement obtained by the Tennessee government’s official site, the task force aims to enhance the existing Operation Viper, an FBI-led initiative that has already seen the arrest of hundreds of violent offenders in the Memphis area.
"Memphis is a remarkable community with great cultural significance that includes top global business and strong faith leaders, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to move this city forward," Gov. Lee expressed. This mission aligns with extensive investments made over his seven-year tenure and is expected to be bolstered by President Trump's strategic support.
Complementary to the task force's efforts, Gov. Lee has authorized a substantial increase in Tennessee Highway Patrol presence in Shelby County. In an endeavor to maintain public safety, over 100 troopers will be mobilized to assist local forces, while continuing to coordinate with the Memphis Police Department through the Bluff City Task Force. "We've made significant investments to address crime throughout my seven years in office, and thanks to President Trump’s leadership, the Memphis Safe Task Force will ensure we have every resource at our disposal to create significant change," said Gov. Lee.
Financial backing is substantial, with Tennessee committing $200 million to the Violent Crime Intervention Fund and Downtown Public Safety Grants, directly aimed at mitigating violent crime and forging safer cities. Specifically for Shelby County, more than $40 million is allotted to support local enforcement agencies in implementing evidence-based programs and strategies to reduce criminal activity.
