Governor Kathy Hochul has taken a concrete step toward revitalizing New York’s downtowns with a hefty $200 million funding announcement. This injection of capital is set to energize Round 9 of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) and Round 4 of the NY Forward program, as published on September 3rd, according to the Governor's Office official website. These programs boast a success record of disbursing $1.2 billion into the hands of 151 communities state-wide, aiming to spruce up urban centers and invigorate local economies.

The funding comes with open arms for applications – all accessible via the State’s Consolidated Funding Application Portal until November 7, 2025. New York City hopefuls have a tad earlier cutoff, needing to pitch to their respective Borough President’s offices by October 31, 2025. "Through the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward program, we’re making transformative investments that not only strengthen our local economies, but also create vibrant, walkable downtowns for generations to live, work and play," Hochul stated, as per the Governor's Office official announcement.

The twist this year is the necessity for communities to hold a “Pro-Housing Community” designation to dip into the State funding pot, including a sizeable $100 million Pro-Housing Supply fund that the Governor orchestrated for infrastructural support to foster new housing developments. Echoing this sentiment, Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley said, "The Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward program give communities the tools and resources they need to reimagine their futures and drive meaningful change." As reported by the Governor's Office, over 350 municipalities have already secured this badge of honor, ensuring their eligibility for these and other funds.

Each dollar plunged into the DRI scheme is estimated to yield threefold in additional investments, having funded north of 4,500 housing units thus far. "The Downtown Revitalization and NY Forward initiatives are essential in Governor Hochul’s ongoing efforts to reenergize city and town centers across the state," remarked Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Hope Knight in a statement provided by the governor's office. New York State Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas had similar praise, urging all qualifiers to grab the opportunity while the purse strings are loose, as per the Governor's Office.
