Greenpoint’s bar scene is set to retain one of its longtime fixtures as The Pencil Factory prepares to reopen. The Franklin Street bar, which had been a neighborhood staple for 25 years before closing in July, is being revived by Tony Ismail of Cafe Alula and David Doyle of Cafe Balearica, according to Brooklyn Magazine, as cited by Eater. The reopening offers an alternative to the growing presence of chain establishments in the area.

Despite speculation that major retailers like Lululemon or Warby Parker might take over the space, it has been confirmed that 142 Franklin Street will remain a neighborhood bar under new ownership. The lease was highly sought after, but broker Jack Mosseri helped Doyle and Ismail secure the location. "It’s gonna be really neighborhood, local people who come and feel comfortable, feeling like they’re home," Ismail shared in a conversation, as reported by Greenpointers.

The new proprietors, recognizing the Pencil Factory's significance, intend to maintain the integrity of the space with minimal changes while adding a fresh vibe. Brooklyn Magazine mentions that specifics regarding modifications haven't been disclosed yet, but both Ismail and Doyle aim to keep the bar's core ethos intact.

The era of DJ-led dance parties appears to be coming to an end. The new plan for the bar includes maintaining the outdoor seating and occasionally airing sports games on newly installed TVs. The approach aims to create a space for various types of social gatherings without positioning the bar as a full-fledged sports venue. According to an interview with Greenpointers, while some details remain undecided, the targeted opening is scheduled for November or December, pending approval of the liquor license.
