In a recent development that bolsters the efforts of schools to safeguard their environments, schools in Huntington have been granted state funds aimed at ensuring safety. As reported by Indiana House Republicans, the Huntington Catholic School alongside the Huntington County Community School Corp have received a combined sum exceeding $33,000. This financial support emerges from the broader state initiative that has allocated $27 million in matching grants throughout Indiana's educational institutions.
This bolster of funding, steered by State Rep. Lorissa Sweet (R-Wabash), is a fragment of larger legislative efforts to concentrate school safety under the Department of Homeland Security’s wide-reaching umbrella. Sweet noted that the financial aid "can be used for a wide range of safety needs like support for resource officers, equipment and technology, active event warning systems, threat assessments, and student-parent support service programs," as captured in the information divulged by Indiana House Republicans. Specifically, Huntington Catholic School has been awarded $7,094, while the Huntington County Community School Corp will benefit from $26,799 to be funneled into safety upgrades.
Since the inception of the Secured School Safety Grant Program in 2013, Indiana's commitment to educational environments where children can learn without fear has been manifestly clear, with more than $214 million invested. "Local schools can use this grant funding in a variety of ways to protect students and staff," Sweet told Indiana House Republicans. "School safety will always be a top priority for lawmakers."
These grants are part of the legislature's dedication to creating secure learning spaces throughout the state—a necessity that remains at the forefront of educational discourse.
