Commuters navigating the stretch of Interstate 96 between Kent Lake Road and I-275 are now adapting to a new traffic flow system that went fully operational starting today. The "flex lanes" on I-96 have been outfitted with ramp metering signals, designed to alleviate congestion during peak travel hours. According to The Detroit News, these signals will only activate and alternate between red and green when traffic on the freeway dips below 60 mph, in an effort to manage the 160,000 vehicles that traverse this segment on an average day.
MDOT expects these new measures to significantly reduce travel times and improve safety on the highways. Despite some initial concerns, drivers have begun to slowly but surely adapt to the new system, with ramp metering signals instructing them to form two lanes on each ramp and merge one car at a time at the signal's change. The change, designed to control the heavy flow of traffic, might seem like an inconvenience; however, according to a WXYZ report, those who run red lights on the ramps will be subject to tickets identical to ones from street-level traffic lights.
Michigan's ramp metering tactic involves technological systems that include flashing yellow signs, car sensors, and clearly marked lanes to indicate active metering at ramps.
