An Indiana lawmaker’s change in stance on the death penalty has prompted discussions in the state about state-sanctioned executions. Morris outlined a shift from supporting to opposing capital punishment after a period of prayer, reflection, and study of texts on human dignity.
As per the Indiana House Republicans, Morris cited the Dobbs decision as a turning point and now questions the ethical implications of the death penalty. The lawmaker expressed a belief in the sanctity of life from conception to natural death and raised concerns about the state’s participation in executions, highlighting the many roles required in the process.
Morris also urged lawmakers who support the death penalty to take personal responsibility for its implementation, suggesting they personally handle funding and direct involvement in carrying out executions.
