As the 30th Annual Indy Half Marathon at Fort Ben fast approaches, the city gears up for a celebration of endurance and community spirit set for Saturday, Oct 4. But residents and day-trippers beware: road closures will accompany the pounding of runners' feet. According to an announcement on the City of Lawrence's official website, the marathon, which kicks off at 8:00 AM, will close down parts of 59th St, Lee Rd, and the area north of the VFW on the day of the event.
Notable closures include 59th St—stretching from Post Rd to Lee Rd— set to be inaccessible from 7:45 AM until noon. Lee Rd will also see significant disruptions, with its northbound lanes from 59th to 63rd affected between 8:15 AM and 10:15 AM, and southbound, between 63rd to 59th seeing closures lasting until noon. In a bid to accommodate local circulation, Lee Rd north of 63rd to the VFW will follow similar restrictions for northbound traffic.
Residents should note that while the marathon is underway, Lee Rd north of the VFW won't just be footloose territory for the runners. Local traffic north of the veterans' hall is allowed passage via Fall Creek Rd, offering a detour that will at least keep cars moving. The spirit of accommodation and adjustment is palpable as the city prepares to host the athletic event, which has become a staple of local tradition over three decades, as detailed by the city's website.
Those planning to traverse the areas impacted by the marathon should plan ahead to avoid frustration and delays. The Lawrence Police Department is on hand to answer any questions regarding the road closures and navigation through or around the affected areas.
