The skirmish broke out during recreation time at around 10:45 AM and was swiftly handled by the officers on duty. The facility was put on lockdown while additional staff were called to manage the situation. As the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office reports, trained personnel utilized less-lethal options to regain control. Around 30 inmates were involved, with four Sheriff's Office staff and six inmates sustaining injuries. The involved parties were taken to area hospitals, "all are reported to be in stable condition as of this writing," a statement from the Sheriff's Office indicated.

San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus expressed her gratitude towards the quick-acting staff. "I’m grateful to the Sheriff’s Office personnel who acted swiftly to stop the fight and ensure the safety of the correctional facility and everyone inside of the facility," she said, per the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. "Their actions undoubtedly prevented more serious injuries and ensured the situation was quickly under control."
