Las Cruces residents have a voice in how their city will innovate and expand its infrastructure, thanks to the recently approved Gross Receipts Tax increase. As reported by the City of Las Cruces, a series of community meetings is set to take place over the coming weeks, inviting public input on potential capital improvement projects funded by the GRT increase voted in during the 2024 election.
Areas targeted for these improvements include public safety, parks, streets, and other critical infrastructure essentials, with the City Council keen on directing the newly acquired funds based on the community's demands. The meetings, to be held at 6 p.m. on respective dates for each city district, ranging from September 30 at Branigan Library in District 1 through to October 9 at Doña Ana Community College for District 6, are positioned as platforms for residents to express what projects they believe should be prioritized and where the city's investment should flow.
The feedback collected from these gatherings will not simply dissipate into the ether; rather, it will form the basis of discussions at a City Council Work Session slated for October 27. Following this, a resolution directing the course of the spending will be adopted later in the year, ensuring the council's actions align with the preferences and needs highlighted by the inhabitants of Las Cruces themselves.
