Las Cruces law enforcement is cautioning residents to stay vigilant against a wave of deceptive communication strategies, unsolicited calls, text messages, or social media contacts, designed to extract personal or financial information or even cash itself. It appears that these scammers lure their victims with offers of personal happiness or financial gain, and police are firm in their message: these overtures are nothing more than a ruse to line the con artist's pockets, as per the Las Cruces Police Department.
According to the issued alert, many scams seem to be local, displaying a 575-phone number on Caller IDs or masquerading as being from a New Mexico small town; however, these calls might actually originate from completely different locations. It's all part of the scammer's toolkit to gain an individual's trust and eventually their sensitive information or money. The Las Cruces police have observed these scam attempts across various platforms, including social media and direct messaging, indicating an expansive net cast by the scammers.
In their efforts to educate the public, the Las Cruces police have offered a list of practical safety tips: they advise residents to protect their personal and financial information, refrain from sending money to unverified parties, and approach deals that seem excessively favorable with a healthy dose of skepticism. Logging a suspicious number on the Federal Trade Commission's Do Not Call Registry is another recommended preventive measure against these nefarious calls and messages. Individuals unfortunate enough to fall prey to these schemes are urged to report their experiences to the police by calling (575) 526-0795, which could help prevent future occurrences of such fraudulent activities.
