A Lauderhill Police officer finds himself entangled with the law after an incident during a crash investigation in March, where he is accused of battery. Officer Jason Reyes, 42, once lauded for his acts of bravery at the scene of a fiery crash in May 2024, now faces a misdemeanor simple battery charge for striking a driver in the face, with the alleged altercation captured on his body-worn camera, reported Local 10.
On March 8 at 4200 Rock Island Road, Officer Reyes, while investigating a crash, became involved in a verbal altercation with driver Jeremiah Ayden. As Ayden stood up at Reyes’ direction, the officer allegedly struck him in the face with a closed fist, causing Ayden to stumble backward and suffer a bloody lip – as per the arrest affidavit obtained by local media, meanwhile, Reyes has pleaded not guilty to the charge, NBC Miami detailed that the officer is to appear in Broward County court on October 3.
Following the incident, the Lauderhill Police Department placed Reyes on administrative leave, emphasizing their commitment to holding officers to the highest standards of professionalism and accountability. The department noted that allegations of misconduct are taken seriously in order to maintain community trust, adding that Reyes has been on paid leave since the date of the alleged occurrence, as reported by NBC Miami.
Reyes, who joined the Lauderhill force as a road patrol officer in 2021, previously made headlines and received communal praise for his heroic measures in a 2024 accident, where he extracted victims from a burning vehicle, a dramatic rescue caught on his body camera, and later shared by him in a public recollection of the event saying, "My priority was the car that was on fire" and admitting the profound emotional toll it took on him that night, according to Local 10.
