
A fatal shooting involving a Memphis police officer and a 34-year-old man identified as Vontorian Anthony rocked Parkway Village yesterday morning, according to reports from local news outlets. Action News 5 detailed that the Memphis Police Department received calls about a man discharging a firearm on Northbridge Avenue near Ashwood Street just before 2:25 a.m., prompting officers to respond to the tumultuous scene.
In the ensuing encounter, as reported by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and shared by Local Memphis, Anthony allegedly pointed his weapon at an officer and another officer shot at Anthony, who was then taken in critical condition to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the police and paramedics swiftly intervened but despite their efforts Vontorian Anthony was declared dead after arrival at the medical facility.
The incident left one officer wounded; however, details regarding the nature of the officer's injuries were not immediately disclosed, as per Local Memphis. WV News corroborated that the injured officer was transported to the hospital and is in non-critical condition.
The TBI is leading the investigation into the incident and will share its findings with the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office. The names of the officers involved have not been released, which is standard practice in police shooting cases.
