A woman was arrested and charged with a felony in Maricopa County after she made violent threats to local animal shelter employees. The suspect, 37-year-old Katie Michelle Dickson, surrendered to authorities following a warrant for her arrest due to a series of alarming phone calls she made threatening employees of the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC).
During approximately 40 minutes on June 26, 2024, Dickson purportedly made 18 separate calls to MCACC, wherein she allegedly made threats involving arson, murder, and sexual violence against the staff. "Threats of this nature are unacceptable, and we will do everything in our power to protect staff and hold bad actors accountable," Thomas Galvin, District 2 Chairman said in a statement to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office newsroom. The MCACC, which works daily to find homes for pets, often faces criticism and personal attacks, a reality that Galvin hopes will be mitigated by the arrest.
The Sheriff's Office and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office cooperatively scrutinized the evidence leading to Dickson's charges. Sheriff Jerry Sheridan highlighted the collaboration, stating, “This arrest is the result of strong collaboration between our office, and our county partners.” He emphasized that threats disrupt the community and promised a zero-tolerance stance on such behavior.
Noting the importance of workplace safety, Debbie McKnight, the Director of MCACC, expressed gratitude towards law enforcement's effort, "The safety of our staff is our top priority, and we take any threats against our team members very seriously." Dickson, a resident of Vancouver, Washington, has been released on bond and is scheduled to appear in court on October 21.
