The Georgia Department of Corrections has appointed Martella Walker as the new Deputy Warden of Security at Ware State Prison, where she will be handling the oversight of security staff and management of 1,455 male inmates.
Walker's ascent through the ranks of the GDC began in 2001 at the Irwin County Parole Revocation Center, serving initially as a Correctional Officer before transferring to Wilcox State Prison the following year, and since climbing her career ladder as a Sergeant, a Lieutenant, Chief of Security and Unit Manager has demonstrated the leadership qualities that garnered her the promotion, according to Commissioner Tyrone Oliver, she's been a paragon of the department's mission and with her comprehensive training — embracing everything from Basic Correctional Officer Training to Unit Manager Academy — she is deemed well-equipped to shoulder the responsibilities awaiting her in this new role, the Georgia Department of Corrections announced yesterday.
"Martella has worked her way up through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership qualities along the way," said Commissioner Tyrone Oliver. "We are certain she will continue to uphold the GDC mission as she begins her role as Deputy Warden of Security," as noted by the press release.
The Georgia Department of Corrections, which supervises around 49,000 state prisoners with the help of roughly 9,000 employees, is one of the largest prison systems in the country.
