As Hurricane Kiko bears down on the Central Pacific, the Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has sounded the alarm on the need for immediate preparedness. In a recent press release covered by Maui County News Flash, MEMA Acting Administrator Kono Davis emphasized the importance of early action, stating, "While many people wait until the last minute, early preparation is critical."

With Kiko expected to weaken into a tropical cyclone by the time it nears the Hawaiian Islands, residents are advised not to underestimate the storm. The County of Maui departments are proactively preparing for severe weather, ensuring the readiness of emergency services such as the Maui Fire and Police departments, which have announced increased staffing. Despite the forecasts of weakening, the possibility of severe rain and wind cannot be dismissed casually.

In the wake of the pending threat, infrastructure management is underway. The Department of Public Works has been busy clearing debris and maintaining water flow systems, tasks critical to reducing the risk of flooding. According to Maui County's statement, crews have completed debris removal at Kūlanihākoʻi and Waipuʻilani debris basins and are preparing for the worst with temporary stop signs should traffic lights fail.

Offering a lifeline to those who may need it most, Department of Parks and Recreation facilities have been put on alert to serve as shelters if necessary. And as the storm draws near, MEMA urges residents to reach a state of "Two Weeks Ready." This state of preparedness includes having a copious supply of water, food, and medications to last each household member, including pets, for at least fourteen days. They also recommend assembling go-bags with essentials to last three days in the event an evacuation is called.
