In an effort to enhance road safety in Memphis, city officials have deployed an automated speed camera enforcement program, targeting areas notorious for hazardous driving conditions. The Memphis Police Department and the city are installing 30 cameras at 15 strategic sites, encompassing high-risk intersections, winding S-curves, and critical school zone areas, as disclosed by a recent announcement on the City of Memphis website. These locales have been selected due to their higher likelihood of traffic incidents, with the cameras serving as a deterrent for speeding and as a tool for issuing $50 fines for violations after a 30-day grace period.
According to the City of Memphis website, Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis emphasized the program's primary aim, stating, "These cameras have been shown to reduce crashes and serious injuries. Our goal is to change dangerous driving habits in Memphis and make the roads safer for everyone," highlighting the intention to rectify precarious driving behaviors rather than simply penalize them. Enforcement will be preceded by an initial warning period starting on Sept. 30; actual citations will commence from Oct. 30. The enforcement mechanism involves capturing images of vehicle license plates and securely transmitting them for confirmation by law enforcement before slapping fines on vehicle owners.
Memphis Mayor Paul Young backed the initiative, elucidating its emphasis on communal safety by declaring, "Installing speed zone enforcement cameras at high-risk intersections and school zones is a critical step toward improving community safety; we’re committed to creating safer streets for all Memphians, especially our children and pedestrians," as per the details shared on the City of Memphis website. To ensure the technology's reliability, the city has engaged with Verra Mobility, renowned for its expertise in speed safety solutions.
The cameras are expected to be a technologically advanced solution for the city's traffic safety challenges, equipped with cutting-edge digital cameras and infraction detection systems located at key sites, including Union Avenue's school zone and the reverse curve on New Allen Road, among other school zones and S-curves across the city.
