The East Valley community participated in a Relay for Life event at Westwood High School in Mesa to raise funds for cancer research. Nearly two dozen teams attended despite the heat, abc15 reported.
Survivors, including Nick Ciletti, who beat neuroblastoma, led the Survivors' Lap. The event also recognized volunteers, medical staff, and caregivers supporting those affected by cancer. Ray Mota, a two-time cancer survivor, shared his experience with abc15, highlighting the importance of shared understanding among survivors.
Participants like Tony Williams from Big O Tires contributed personal stories and donated $200,000 to the cause. The Relay for Life official events page noted that staking tents on the turf was not permitted to protect the grounds, recommending weights or sandbags instead.
