Miami residents can expect a continuation of the stormy weather pattern with scattered afternoon thunderstorms and high temperatures well into the 90s through the weekend. According to the National Weather Service, there's a "40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm" today, with a heat index reaching a sizzling 102 degrees. Similar conditions with a slight chance of evening showers will carry on across South Florida into the early parts of next week.
For those waiting for a break from the rain, Sunday may finally bring some relief. Following the departure of tropical storms to the east, some patches of drier air are forecast to offer a brief respite. NBC Miami reports "rain chances could drop a notch as early as Sunday and linger into next week."
Meanwhile, the tropics are far from dormant with three systems stirring interest. The National Hurricane Center has fixated its attention on Gabrielle, whose path across the Atlantic is set to impact the Azores. A hurricane warning is in effect for the islands, with hazardous conditions expected to begin Thursday night and continue into Friday.
Although the additional tropical activity, including Humberto and Invest 94-L, is predicted "to remain east of us," South Florida will not be entirely spared from their influence. Indirect impacts from these systems should lead to the drier air moving into the region, thus being a potential cause for the late-weekend drop in rain probabilities referenced on NBC Miami.
For now, locals are advised to stay prepared for afternoon storms with today's highs near 92° and conditions briskly fluctuating between partly cloudy to sunny with similar highs projected for the weekend. The forecast for the upcoming days stays consistent, with a mix of sun and scattered showers, slightly fewer storms predicted for Sunday with highs reaching around 91°.
