Miami-Dade County offices will be closed on Monday, Oct. 13, in observance of Columbus Day. Public facilities, including libraries and pet adoption centers, will be affected by the closures. The county will also recognize the day as Indigenous People’s Day, honoring the contributions of the Miccosukee and other local indigenous communities.
Even with the celebrations and observances, Miami-Dade County will keep essential services running as usual. Garbage collection, recycling, and public transit will operate normally, so Monday routines won’t be disrupted. "Solid Waste Management will be running regular garbage and recycling pick-up services," as originally reported by the county's website, and for those commuting can rely on "regular weekday service on Metrorail, Metromover and Metrobus."
Miami-Dade golfers can maintain their regular tee times at local courses, following posted safety guidelines. Meanwhile, "Miami-Dade Public Library System will be closed Monday, Oct. 14," delaying access for library visitors, according to the county's official announcement.
Those planning to enjoy the holiday on the water should stay informed. Residents can sign up for "Miami-Dade Marina Alerts for text messages about boat ramp closures and re-openings." Boaters are also reminded of the 'Three A's of Crime Prevention': stay aware of your surroundings, be alert to suspicious activity, and avoid dangerous situations. For a full overview of county services and safety tips during the holiday, see the Holiday Guide provided by Miami-Dade County.
