Officer Hovde joined the force in February, transitioning from a career in healthcare to law enforcement, driven by a desire to help people in dynamic new ways. Reflecting on her career shift, Hovde said, "After stepping away from graduate school, I took about a year to reflect, spending a lot of time in prayer, seeking clarity about what should come next." It was through this introspection that she felt "the Lord called me to step into law enforcement."
Her entry into the field was facilitated by the Integrated Career Pathways for Officers in Emergency Response and Technology (ICPOET) program. This initiative, unique to Minnesota, allows individuals like Hovde to rapidly commit to a career switch, earning a salary while partaking in crucial training. Hovde encourages others by positing, "As long as you're willing to put in the time and effort, this program is perfect for anyone looking to transition into a career in law enforcement."
Officer King, on the other hand, found her pathway to policing following her graduation from the University of Minnesota. She first stepped into the world of emergency response as a 9-1-1 dispatcher at Hennepin County. Craving to be more directly involved in field operations, King pursued her skills courses by day, while maintaining her night shifts at dispatching. With community relations at the forefront of her policing philosophy, King wishes to bridge community trust, asserting, "My desire to work in law enforcement stems from my passion for strengthening the relationship between the public and the police."
When it came to choosing a department to serve, King was particular, wanting to "start my career at the same department where I retire." She remarked Minnetonka's "high retention trends support that goal." Both officers share a commitment to the community they serve and diverse interests when off-duty, with Hovde enjoying weightlifting and King practicing jiu-jitsu.
In addition to their professional aims, the officers' personal tidbits were highlighted by the city's news release. Hovde's preference for coffee during late shifts aligns with the demanding pace she sought in a career, while King's choice of iced coffee and Celsius reflects a balancing act between nighttime alertness and a passion for fitness.
