The Focus on Bridges program, launched by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), is a finalist in the 2025 America’s Transportation Awards. After winning first place in its regional competition, the program is now eligible for the national Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award, the latter determined by public online voting.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation release, started in 2019, the program aimed to repair or replace 250 bridges, mostly in agricultural areas. All 250 bridges were addressed over four years, improving access and transportation across rural Missouri.

MoDOT Director Ed Hassinger noted the program involved collaboration with the governor, state lawmakers, and the construction industry to complete the projects.

Funding for the program included a $50 million General Revenue allocation approved by the Missouri General Assembly and governor, an $81.2 million federal grant, and $301 million in bonds issued by the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission. This approach allowed additional funds from the state’s transportation budget to be used for other projects.

The Missouri Department of Transportation is encouraging the public to vote in the People’s Choice category to support the program’s national recognition.
