For those who've dedicated their lives to military service, a final resting place that honors their sacrifices is important. The Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville recognizes this with the addition of a new columbarium wall. This expansion will be dedicated during a public ceremony on October 16, 2025, at 11 a.m., as confirmed by the Missouri Veterans Commission. The event is set to take place at the cemetery address, 20109 Business Hwy 13, and marks the completion of a significant $2.1 million project begun last November.
The new structure promises room for 1,600 niches for cremated remains, responding to the nearing capacity of the existing wall set for August 2026, which was built with reverence in 2018. Funded by the Veterans Commission Capital Improvement Trust Fund, the cemetery project stands as a fully reimbursable effort by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, according to the same source. The scheduling of its dedication, not casually, includes a firing volley and will reflect patriotically on the service of the veterans it serves to commemorate.
This effort to accommodate an ever-growing number of veterans who have passed away provides a poignant reminder of the ongoing nature of military service, even after active duties end. With construction having been in the works since the previous year, the wall is an enduring testament to the commitment of the Missouri Veterans Commission to honor veterans with the dignity they deserve.
Executive Director Paul Kirchhoff will lead the dedication ceremony. Routinely, events like these, grounded in military tradition, offer a noteworthy pause in our fast-paced lives to honor those who fought to protect the freedoms too often taken for granted. They did not undertake their service lightly, nor should the dedication of this columbarium wall be received lightly by those whom their service benefited. More details on the upcoming dedication can be found through visiting the Missouri Veterans Commission's website.
