Monroe County schools have received more than $194,000 through Indiana’s Secured School Safety Grant Program. State Rep. Dave Hall (R-Norman) said the funding is part of a statewide effort that distributes $27 million in state matching grants to 494 schools. Recent legislation also places the Office of School Safety under the Department of Homeland Security to centralize and strengthen school safety protocols, according to a statement from Indiana House Republicans.
The grants will support resource officers, safety equipment, technology infrastructure, and threat assessment programs. Schools receiving funds include Clear Creek Christian School ($5,400), Lighthouse Christian Academy ($31,450), Monroe County Community School Corp. ($64,750), and Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corp. ($92,500).
State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) noted the funds can be used for various safety measures, including active event warning systems and student-parent support service programs. State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville) added that preparation and resources are both essential for school safety.
Since the program began in 2013, Indiana has provided more than $214 million in state matching grants to schools. Additional information on the Secured School Safety Grant Program is available through the state’s school safety hub.
