Nashville residents seeking energy assistance will see a change in the program schedule. The Metropolitan Action Commission (MAC) announced that the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will now start on November 1, one month later than usual, due to the launch of a new eligibility system by the Tennessee Department of Housing Development (THDA).

The delay is the result of a statewide system update aimed at streamlining the application process. Recognizing that the need for assistance continues regardless of administrative changes, MAC will use city-appropriated funds to help cover the gap. According to the agency’s announcement, "Metro Action plans to utilize city-appropriated funds to support residents most in need during this "gap" period until normal operations resume in November."

There will be a prioritization system in place during the October halt. Looking after the most vulnerable, MAC is set to focus on households facing immediate disconnection that either house disabled members, children under the age of 5, veterans, or adults over 60.

Notably, the change does not affect the housing payment assistance program, which will start as scheduled on October 1. Providing aid with rent, mortgage, and other emergencies, this separate assistance strives for housing stability amidst bureaucratic adjustments. The agency's announcement also reminds that "The last day to apply for all the assistance program for the current program year is September 15," marking the transition into the renewed program year.

Nashville residents looking for more information or hoping to begin the application process are encouraged to visit the MAC's official website or contact their dedicated hotline. The MAC Customer Care Center, located at 1281 Murfreesboro Pike, is available to assist the community from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
