The New Orleans Police Department has released its weekly report on crime statistics for the period of September 14-20, highlighting several notable arrests alongside year-to-date figures on gun arrests and seizures; the NOPD made a total of 199 arrests for illegal possession of a firearm this year, marking a 42-percent decrease from the 345 arrests during the same timeframe in the previous year, as detailed in the preliminary statistics available on the NOPD News website.
In its efforts to address gun violence, the NOPD made significant arrest on September 19, booking Jovon Bell on charges including attempted second-degree murder and illegal possession of a weapon in connection with a shooting that took place just minutes prior on the 1200 block of Decatur Street; on the following day, Darryl Loving was apprehended in relation to a homicide that occurred September 18 on the 9000 block of Chef Menteur Highway, facing a second-degree murder charge.
With regard to gun seizures, the NOPD has secured 1,333 firearms in criminal investigations as of September 15, which represents a 19-percent decrease compared to the 1,655 firearms seized in the same period last year; these figures, though preliminary, suggest a downtrend in gun-related incidents as per the NOPD's data.
