Following a prolonged investigation into a 2021 shooting in Newark, police have finally apprehended suspect Terry Franklin, finally answering the community's call for justice. The Newark Police Department shared details of the arrest on their official social media page, noting that the shooting incident unfolded on May 25, 2021, when multiple gunshots caused damage to vehicles and at least one residence on the 37000 block of Saint Matthew Drive.
The investigation advanced when detectives connected the dots between the shooting and a vehicle collision that occurred later that same night, involving a victim who was also the driver who sustained gunshot wounds. The same victim underwent emergency surgery at a local trauma center, where they've since made a recovery. Newark Police ultimately identified Franklin in connection with the violent incident. They had been on his trail since obtaining an arrest warrant shortly after the crime was committed, though the suspect had left the state following the shooting.
Franklin remained at large until his recent arrest on August 13 by a Bay Area law enforcement agency for an unrelated matter, which finally led to his capture by Newark Police last Wednesday. The Alameda County District Attorney has charged Franklin with attempted murder, willful and malicious discharge of a firearm at an inhabited dwelling or occupied vehicle, and negligent discharge of a firearm likely to cause harm or death.
